Sky Mall magazine
Posted (Patrick) in General on July-15-2010

If you’ve flown, you’ve probably seen a complimentary copy of Sky Mall magazine. They offer some pretty zany items at some ridiculously high prices. They have stuff for your home, computer, travel and even your swimming pool. There is actually a floating ping pong table availabe for your swimming pool. Crazy.

This makes sense
Posted (Patrick) in General on July-12-2010

There’s a push to clean up the internet, since some web sites are legitimate but have a name that can be used for pornography. The solution? Change the porn sites to have a .xxx on the end of the website name. The idea is is that if you type in a website with a .com ending, you can be sure it will be a safe site for anyone to visit. I don’t know who came up with it, but this is a great idea.

Popeye was a neanderthal
Posted (Patrick) in General on July-9-2010

Evolution scientists think that ancient man had arms similar to that of Popeye based on skeletal remains. I’m not going to say they’re wrong, but my question, with evolution in general, is if we spontaneously changed and we had these features that seemed to be an advantage, why did we not evolve with these changes in place? To me, evolution is saying we are a fluke of the universe. And if I can wax philosophical for a second, where’s the significance to our existence if we are nothing more than a cosmic accident?

The cold war reheated?
Posted (Patrick) in General on June-30-2010

I didn’t think we had to worry about this anymore. I figured the big national security issues were in the Middle East, but apparently we still have Russians spying on us. In what seems a nod to James Bond, a 28 year old woman who could be a model was busted for passing along info to Russians. Let’s see Tom Clancy write about this one.

Is there a place where stupidity is bottomless? I think we found it. BP CEO Hayward decided he needed to get away from it all and did so with a yacht race in England. I’ve made it abundantly clear my feelings on this particular disaster and this is continuing to make me madder as the days go by. I don’t even know where to begin with this one or where it will end up. Someone please hit someone else over the head with a shovel to wake anybody up.

Father’s Day recap
Posted (Patrick) in General on June-21-2010

Well, the nation celebrated Father’s Day yesterday, and while I may not be a dad myself, I made sure to call mine in Minnesota and spent the day with my wife’s family. My wife’s family gave out coffee table books, digital picture frames, etc. I think the biggest hit was the digital photo frame because you can look at almost an entire photo album in one place.

Memorial Day
Posted (Patrick) in General on May-28-2010

With summer officialy starting this weekend, let’s make sure we all take a minute on Memorial Day to honor the men and women of our Armed Services. This is still a great country with freedoms that are the envy of most of the world, despite what you might read in the paper. And the reason we have this unbelievable freedom is due to the sacrifice of those in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. While many have lost their lives in service, sacrifice here means putting your life on hold to serve this country and its people. You deserve our thanks for bearing the responsibility for countless strangers throughout this land as well as your own friends and family. If you are a veteran, thank you so much for your service. I cannot do so personally to everyone, but I toast your life and service. If you have a veteran in your family, make sure you let them know how much you appreciate them and how much their years of sacrifice means to you.

Tiger returns
Posted (Patrick) in Being a dude, General on April-8-2010

Well, the moment the nation has been waiting for is finally here. Tiger Woods is back on the golf course at Augusta to compete in the Masters tournament this weekend. OK, now before anyone starts the name calling, let’s keep this civil. Here’s my take. From a sporting and business stanpoint, fans should be ecstatic that Tiger is back. The man simply plays great golf and has since he debuted. From a celebrity point of view, it’ll be interesting to see how he handles the gallery. Let’s face hit, Tiger is in the sporting business, which is a subdivision of the entertainment business, which is itself a subdivision of the celebrity business. And in the celebrity business, men are prone to cheating. Tiger is not the first person to cheat on his wife, and is probably not the last. Does that mean what he did is right? In my opinion, no. Did the nation overreact to his scandal? My opinion, again, is yes. His wife will not be at Augusta this year, but she has never gone to this tournament. So, you can’t read into that at all. I hope Tiger will deal with his personal demons and reconcile with his wife, and I hope the nation will allow him to continue being a superb golfer and leave his personal life at home.

Next up, kindergarten class re-enacts “Showgirls”
Posted (Patrick) in General, Movies on March-31-2010

This is so perposterous, I can’t even make this up.  There is a video on YouTube of a school play of…Scarface.  The Brian Depalma film holds the record for the most f-bombs dropped in a movie, never mind the violence and the drugs. I’ve watched the video; it’s legitimate. Kids in 2nd or 3rd grade using the word “fudge” as a substitute, a pile of popcorn represents the cocaine, and nerf guns and sound effects round out this production.  Now, I have no problem with watching the movie, if you’re an adult, but to have kids re-enact this particular movie almost seems like one of the seven signs of the apocalypse.  If you’re going to do a school play around a movie, I’m sure there are others out there that can entertain with offending.

All you can say is “OUCH!”
Posted (Patrick) in General, Video Games on March-25-2010

This is why I don’t play too many video games online. Apparently, a young Chinese man was in an internet cafe, playing a game with someone else in the same location. The opponent flew into a rage thinking this kid used a cheat code? Did this angry youth walk away and just call him a name? No, he did what any other non-rational person would do. He buried a 10 inch knife into this kids temple. Want to know that amazing part? The kid was able to walk to the local emergency with the knife still embedded in his head and survived the removal. Don’t believe me? Take a look at the picture.
