What the funniest TV show of all time?
Posted (Patrick) in Television, comedy on May-3-2010

This one could start some trouble, I think but I find it fun to stir these kinds of pots from time to time. What is the all-time funniest TV show? You could go by decade and it would probably be easier and fairer, because the standards for acceptable comedy and funny comedy have changed in the 50+ years of television. And why would it be the funniest? The jokes, the setting or the topics covered in each episode? People regard All in the Family as a classic, but it was highly controversial for writing a show around a bigoted patriarch. MASH is the longest running live-action sitcom, but some people felt it strayed too far from its roots by the end. So what is the funniest of TV show of all time and why?

For my pick, I think I have to go with Monty Python’s Flying Circus. I love dry humor, the dryer the better. And these guys took dry and added absurdity to it. They revolutionized sketch comedy and I always laugh, even at the same lines that I know are coming.

Shows for Guys who Like Shows
Posted (Patrick) in Being a dude, Television on April-12-2010

If you’re looking for a sporting event that makes you feel proud to be a guy, then you have to check out a show called Ninja Warrior on G4.  I don’t know how long this show has been on, but this show covers an American Gladiators style obstacle course competition from Japan. Unlike the Strongest Man competition, which has bags of muscles trying to lift small cars filled with women, this cometition test everything; strength, agility, coordination, you name it. This course is divided into 4 stages and is so extreme that out of 100 competitors, only 13 made it past the first stage.  I will continue watching this for quite some time.

R.I.P. Peter Graves
Posted (Patrick) in Celebrity, Movies, Television on March-17-2010

Peter Graves, star of Mission Impossible, voiceover artist for television, died of a heart attack at age 83. While I didn’t see his turn on Mission Impossible, he will always be one of the highlights of the movie Airplane as the pilot Captain Oveur.  I watch him in that movie and laugh to the point of wheezing.

Let the Madness begin
Posted (Patrick) in NCAA jerseys, Television on March-15-2010

With Selection Sunday now past us, we can now prepare for the first games starting tomorrow. The one thing I miss from working in an office is the office pool concerning the brackets.  We always had friendly contests to see who could get their brackets closest.  Never was anything too serious.  But, now working with my wife at home, she’s not much of a college sports fan, and winning an office pool with her, even a friendly one, doesn’t seem to be worth it.  I’ll still enjoy watching the games and following the action.

Who has this kind of time?
Posted (Patrick) in Celebrity, General, Music, Television on March-9-2010

If given the chance to redesign our currency, not change the numbers, just change the faces, who faces would we use. Presidents have been the face we see most often, with a few important leaders such as Ben Franklin. Some people have redesigned money with pop culture faces and the ones that make me laugh the most are these.

Yep, that’s the Burger King on the $1 bill, Michael instead of Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill, and Homer Simpson gracing the $50 bill.  I think the Michael Jackson bit is pretty funny, and with the way Burger King and McDonalds adertise their dollar menu it only seems natural. Homer just makes me laugh, simply put.

Selection Sunday
Posted (Patrick) in Television on March-5-2010

With Selection Sunday about a week away, I’m already looking forward to the tournament. My only problem is I will be traveling on Selection Sunday, but I love to watch this as it happens. I’ve got my eye out for live video streaming services that will let me follow the drama of who gets selected and who gets snubbed.

Leno’s return
Posted (Patrick) in Television on March-2-2010

Hey, did anyone watch the Tonight Show last night? I forgot to watch and see how Leno fared after the whole fiasco before the Olympics started. How did he look? Did he seem comfortable? I read a quick story that only mentioned a couple of his monologue jokes and a few audience members who were already fans. Anybody got details?

Simon Cowell is engaged
Posted (Patrick) in Celebrity, Television on March-1-2010

I have one thing to ask. How intense were those dates? Was there a phone number to call and cast a vote?  What number was she wearing? Read more details here.

Yikes
Posted (Patrick) in Television on February-24-2010

I saw the replay of the speed skater disqualification from the marathon event.  If you didn’t see it, basically, the skater’s coach told him to change lanes, the skater complied, which led to a rule violation and a disqualification.  Now, that’s bad enough, but when you add the fact that this particular skater was favored to win the gold, had it locked up, and lost it because of his coach’s error, that makes it even worse.  Ouch!

The Skeleton is aptly named
Posted (Patrick) in Television on February-22-2010

I watched the Skeleton Friday night for the first time and I had one reaction: ARE YOU SERIOUS? While the luge is bad enough, and the tragedy at the beginning of the games should attest to the events inherent danger, the skeleton is worse. Men and women train to go head first down a luge run on a sled that lies underneath them and the only methods of turning are their legs and body weight. This is a disaster waiting to happen that even hurts to watch.
